5 Things Great Churches Do

Recently, last night in fact, I was asked what made a church great.   I answered, “Five things make a church great.”

1. Worship - Let's get real for a minute.   We are not talking about music styles here.   God doesn't care whether you have a praise band or choir and orchestra.   He is not concerned with which version of a hymnal that you use or if you sing from words on a PowerPoint.   He is concerned with the matter of your heart truly worshiping.    Great churches always magnify the name of Jesus over and above the name of the church or the performers on the platform.   Great churches magnify Jesus in ALL that they do.

2. Evangelism – Great churches always focus on others.   Their eyes are constantly looking to the nations and the community that surrounds them.   They introduce Jesus to everyone they can as fast as they can with no exception.   Great churches are like the Marines -- in that they leave no one behind.

3. Fellowship - Great churches have members who like each other and their unity is a magnate for others who are desperate to belong to something great -- something bigger than themselves.   Great churches include everyone.

4. Discipleship – Great churches lead people to become more like Christ in all that they do.   Everything, whether it is from a sermon or from a classroom or from something that is sung teaches.   Even the architecture teaches how to follow Christ.   In Great churches nothing is left to chance, because everything points to a walk with Christ.

5. Ministry – Great churches serve others.   Great churches offer one opportunity after another for their members to go and serve.

I was then asked if I knew of any great churches.   I smiled and said, "There are a few, but very few."   Is your church great?   Why not?   What can you do to make it great?
